World champion players from the Cory Band have launched a fascinating history book cataloguing their ongoing success.
“Cory Cory Hallelujah” traces the proud history of the legendary Band, from their pioneering days as the Ton Temperance Band through 125 years of change to their current status as world leaders in the brass band movement.
It was officially launched prior to a gala concert at St David’s Hall in Cardiff.
This substantial book features more than 200 pages and over 150 colour photographs. It also lists hundreds of past members as it records the trials and tribulations of Wales’ premier Band.
The Book discusses and celebrates the characters, conductors and players who have formed the ethos of this fine ensemble, including dedicated chapters about the early years under the direction of J.G. Dobbing, Reg Little and T.J. Powell as well as more familiar names such as Walter Hargreaves, Arthur Kenney and Denzil Stephens. The book also brings the reader up to date with an insight into the working methods of present conductor, Dr. Robert Childs.
Cory, Cory Hallelujah lifts the soul with inspirational tales of success. The Book also captures some of the dark sad times; including the sudden death of T. J .Powell as he conducted a BBC Radio Broadcast and the tragic Bandroom fire of 1990.
Several chapters are dedicated to mile-stone events such as National, British Open and European contest wins. However, non competitive achievements are also chronicled, such as appearing in the ‘Guinness Book of Records’ for making the fastest recording in the World and being the first Band to record a BBC Broadcast.
As the Band celebrates its 125th year, Dr Robert Childs provides a compelling and unique insight into the colourful history of Cory Band.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism Cllr Robert Bevan said, “Our valleys have been filled with music and song since the first tram of coal was brought the surface. We are known throughout the world for our famous male voice choirs and brass bands alike.
“Cory has certainly made its impact on the world stage and this book illustrates their continued success as musical ambassadors for our county borough and our nation as a whole.”
