Council commitment to adult protection praised

Denbighshire County Council has welcomed a report which praised the authority’s work in protecting vulnerable adults in the county.

The report, published) by the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales follows an inspection which was carried out in November 2009.

The report highlights a number of key strengths:

  • Effective implementation of the North Wales policies and procedures for the Protection of Vulnerable Adults in Denbighshire, supported by an organisational commitment to learn from experience and to promote a positive adult protection service culture.
  • The Council is effective in receiving and processing referrals and directing people to other services.
  • In the cases reviewed by inspectors, sound judgements were generally made in relation to assessment of urgency, with immediate action being taken to safeguard adults when necessary.
  • Partner agencies spoke positively about working with the Council.
  • Examples of good inter-agency working to safeguard adults.
  • Extensive training programme available to staff.
  • Good leadership from senior managers and councillors.

The report also identifies areas for improvement around risk assessments and management in the increased numbers of referrals.

Councillor Pauline Dobb, Cabinet Lead Member for Health, Social Care and Well-being, said: “This report highlights the amount of good work going on  to protect vulnerable adults in the county and I must commend staff for their dedication in providing the best services possible to the people of Denbighshire.

We feel that a key strength is our commitment and ability to work with other organisations to look after the welfare of adults and this has been highlighted as a key strength in the report.

We acknowledge there are areas for improvements and we are constantly looking at ways of improving our services, but the people of Denbighshire can rest assured that the council will not be complacent and will continue to strive towards providing the best possible care for all those people that require our services.”
