Denbighshire County Council has hailed the news that St Asaph has been awarded city status as a historic day for the town.
Councillor Bill Cowie, Chair of Denbighshire, said: “This is a very proud day for St Asaph and a great honour to be named a city.
“It really goes to show how a dedicated team in a small town can compete against far larger communities to achieve his historic achievement.
“St Asaph has a long historic past as a cathedral city and to be officially recognised as a city and to join the likes of Cardiff, Swansea and Newport is a feather in the cap for the people of St Asaph. I’m sure the celebrations will continue for a long time to come”.
Councillor Hugh Evans, Leader of Denbighshire, added: “We would like to offer our sincerest congratulations to the two county councillors representing the town, as well as the wider community and everyone that has been associated with the campaign to gain city status.
“The Council has been working with the local community to develop projects to help regenerate St Asaph through the town plan. This new official status will certainly place St Asaph on the national map and will help raise the profile of the community as a cultural, tourism and business destination.
“A great day for the whole community”.
