Council encourages use of real nappies to cut down on waste

Monmouthshire County Council has made a cut into the amount of waste going to landfill over the past twelve months by handing free washable cotton nappies to parents at local shows and events.  The council has promoted washable nappies as a contributor to minimising waste on a local and regional level for over a decade and in a recent survey of parents who were given free samples 92% found them easy to use.

Waste Education Officer Rebecca Blount said: “With fortnightly refuse collections now operating throughout the county, many parents have become interested in using washable nappies instead of disposables as they have found that they can reduce their household rubbish by half.”

Local mum, Mrs Miranda Jones (pictured) said: “Using real nappies has been the best move for me as a mother of three – not only do I feel that I am doing my bit for the environment and my children’s future but I am also saving money”.
