Eagerly anticipating the arrival of the Olympic Torch on 25th May Monmouthshire County Council has produced maps to help people witness a once in a lifetime event. The Torch will enter Wales through Monmouth, before moving on to Raglan and Abergavenny and continuing its journey towards Cardiff and the rest of the country. As part of its preparations for welcoming the Olympic Torch, the council has published maps of the three towns, highlighting the route, parking, toilet and first aid facilities. The maps have been posted on-line, form the basis of posters and are featured in leaflets.
A council spokesperson said:
“This will be a once in a lifetime event and we’re working hard to ensure that the Torch will receive a warm welcome to Wales and that people will find it as easy as possible to cheer the Torch as it travels through Monmouthshire.”
The Council has also set up a dedicated website for all its Olympics activity – including the welcome to be afforded to the Olympic Torch: http://monleisure.co.uk/?page_id=25
The leaflets can be downloaded from: www.monmouthshire.gov.uk/OlympicTorchGuide
There are easily downloadable leaflets for each of the three towns the torch will pass through. They contain the maps and essential advice for people who wish to come and cheer the torch as it travels through Monmouthshire.
Danielle Seivwright, will carry the torch for part of its journey through Raglan. She said: “I’m really proud to have been chosen as a torchbearer and am delighted that I’ll be running through Raglan. This is an event for everybody and I hope that as many people make the most of the opportunity of seeing the Olympic Torch pass through Monmouthshire and on into the rest of Wales.”
Monmouthshire County Council’s Chairman, Cllr Brian Hood MBE said: “Monmouthshire is proud not only to be welcoming the Olympic Torch to Monmouthshire, but to Wales. Plans are well advanced for us to ensure that our communities are ready to host the Torch as it makes its journey through our beautiful county. And there is a huge range of supporting events before, during and after what’s set to be an amazing day for Monmouthshire and Wales.”
He added:
“We’re looking forward to welcoming the people who carry the Torch through Monmouthshire, those who come to watch them and the countless millions of people who’ll watch the Torch come into Wales through Monmouthshire and see for themselves the warmth of our welcome, the beauty of our towns and countryside and our pride in welcoming the torch to our beautiful county and country.”
