An exciting and ambitious plan to provide a new library in Prestatyn is a step closer to becoming reality, with positive negotiations on-going to relocate businesses from the proposed town centre location to make way for the new development.
Denbighshire County Council was successful in its bid for £300,000 CyMAL funding from the Welsh Government earlier this year. This was one of only two projects given maximum funding from the £1.2 million package announced.
Representatives working on the redevelopment project discussed the proposals with members of Prestatyn Town Council recently.
Jamie Groves, Denbighshire’s Head of Communications, Marketing and Leisure, said: “The current library on Nant Hall Road is certainly not fit for purpose and would need substantial investment to bring its condition up to modern day standards. Refurbishing the building is not a viable option and we considered a number of locations for the proposed new facility, but the building on Kings Avenue is by far the best option.
“What we want is a brand new modern facility providing a library, learning, information and advice centre for use by the whole community. We have consulted extensively on these proposals and there is a lot of support locally for a modern facility that will provide a service for Prestatyn and surrounding communities that is fit for purpose in the 21st century.
“This proposed development will complement other facilities and services already being offered in the town. However, we have always been mindful of the need to provide a quality alternative offer to the current tenants and we are pleased that the tenants of Kings Avenue have engaged with us and that discussions are progressing.”
Ann Waller, who runs 1st Class Clothes in Prestatyn said: “1st Class Clothes will continue to occupy Unit 2, 21 Kings Avenue until such time as they relocate to new premises in the town.
“I am happy to co-operate with Denbighshire County Council, to ensure moving the town’s library to 21 Kings Avenue is to everyone’s benefit.
“1st Class Clothes retail shop at the bottom of Prestatyn High Street will be unaffected and customers are welcome to shop for school uniform for all local schools as usual.
