Families from across Caerphilly county borough gathered at Penallta House council offices recently to receive some fabulous prizes, which they won as a result of attending the authority’s recent ‘Get Active’ events at Newbridge and Heolddu.
To win a prize, visitors to the ‘Get Active’ festivals either had to complete an event feedback form or enter the ‘Get Active’ family competition.
Deputy Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough Council, Cllr James Fussell, presented the winners with their prizes which included, Leisure Lifestyle gym memberships for the county borough’s leisure centres, Ipod shuffles, rugby balls signed by the Ospreys squad 2009-2010 and British Lion Wales and Ospreys International player James Hook, bowling and cinema tickets, signed copies of Scott Quinnell’s book The Hardest Test, spa packages and beauty treatments, make over sessions, sports equipment, pizzas, and meal vouchers for a number of restaurants in the Caerphilly area.
The ‘Get Active’ events encouraged local people of all ages to challenge themselves to become more active, culturally, physically or educationally. During the events the search was on to find the ‘Get Active’ family for 2010 who would replace the Carringtons, last year’s family. A total of 31 families entered the ‘Get Active’ family competition. Anna, Jamie, Jake and Cory Fox from Blackwood were crowned the new family, after stating many good reasons why they would like to change their lifestyle and become more active over the next 12 months.
Throughout the coming year Anna, Jamie and their boys will be challenged to take part in a series of activities run by Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Directorate of Education and Leisure and as a reward for all their hard work they will receive many different prizes.
The Deputy Mayor, Cllr James Fussell said, “I thoroughly enjoyed meeting some of the people who attended our Get Active events at Newbridge and Heolddu back in September and October. Developing ongoing public interest and awareness of the services we provide is high on the council’s agenda. By showcasing what we do, the Get Active campaign aims to encourage the county borough’s residents to take part in our services and improve their lifestyles.”
The council would like to thank the following businesses and people for supporting the Get Active events by donating prizes:
Lords Sports in Bargoed, Nando’s, Frankie & Benny’s and Bowlplex at Nantgarw, Vue Cinemas in Merthyr, Brewer’s Fayre and Pizza Hut at Crossways Business Park in Caerphilly, Red Dragon Radio, The Style Team in Cardiff, Captiva Spa and Lounge and The White Room Caerphilly, Domino’s Pizza, Techniquest, the Ospreys squad and Scott Quinnell.
