Council Secure Funding to Safeguard Road Users

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has secured Welsh Assembly Government funding to safeguard road users, cyclists and pedestrians en route to the Rhondda valleys.

The Council secured £35k to carry our repair works to the retaining wall of the former Hetty Colliery which runs alongside Hopkinstown road and Trehafod. The works are set to commence on 7th February and last approximately 5 weeks.

The retaining wall which is in need of repair has been further affected by the harsh winter and has deteriorated further. The works that will be carried out aim to be done quickly with as little disruption to road users as possible. As a temporary measure traffic lights will be installed to ensure the safety of users whilst the wall is pulled down and removed shortly after.

Councillor Paul Cannon, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Safer Communities, said: “The Council is committed to ensuring that all road users are safeguarded and necessary works are carried out as soon as they are required where possible.

“Thanks to Welsh Assembly Government funding we are now able to carry out this vital work along Hopkinstown road and Trehafod. The Council would ask users of this stretch to bear with us whilst this work is carried out as it is for their longer term safety.
