Council Tax Telephone Scam Warning

Cardiff Council is urging residents not to give their bank account details over the phone to anyone who claim they are calling from the Council Tax office.

The warning comes following reports that unsolicited calls have taken place in Cardiff. During the call residents are asked for their bank account details so that they can receive a Council Tax refund due to overpayment.

The Council is keen to stress that its Council Tax teams would never make unsolicited calls to residents to ask for their bank account details over the phone. The Council will formally notify householders in writing if they are entitled to a refund.

Councillor Mark Stephens, Executive Member for Finance and Service Delivery, said: “I would urge residents to be guarded when receiving any calls that ask for bank account details over the telephone. If something sounds too good to be true it probably is.  Unfortunately there are unscrupulous people out there who want to scam people out of their money and the tactics they use are very convincing.”

The council tax team are on hand to help those who may have any questions about the scam and they can be contacted via Connect 2 Cardiff on 029 2087 2087 or Consumer Direct Wales on 0808 156 6736.
