A top delegation from Caerphilly county borough council will meet CADW representatives this week to encourage them to allow free entry into Caerphilly Castle during a special 2 day Christmas event.
The Caerphilly Medieval Christmas Fayre takes place this year on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th December. Last year’s event was a major success attracting thousands of visitors to the town centre who soaked up the festive atmosphere and snapped up bargains from the wide variety of market stalls on offer.
The market takes place throughout the town centre and within the walls of the historic castle, but some concern was raised last year that an entry fee was charged for shoppers to get into the castle grounds.
Cllr Lindsay Whittle, the leader of council, will join Cllr Ron Davies and Cllr Phil Bevan on Friday to formally request that CADW waive the charges this year.
“The Caerphilly Christmas Fayre is a major event which showcases the wealth of attractions that the town centre has to offer,” said Lindsay Whittle. “The castle is a key draw for many people and we hope that CADW will give visitors an early Christmas present by offering free entrance to this fantastic historic structure during the 2 day event.”
Cllr Ron Davies added, “Events like this can bring much needed investment to our town centres at a time when retailers need all the support they can get, so it’s important that we do everything we can to encourage as many people as possible to shop locally and boost the local economy. We hope CADW will join us in our efforts to make this year’s Christmas Fayre the best yet and allow visitors the opportunity to enjoy the castle experience for free.”
