Councillors still have an important role

Anglesey’s commissioners have reassured county councillors that they still have an important role to play in the democratic process.

Commissioners Alex Aldridge and Byron Davies met with elected members earlier this week to explain more about their remit and answer questions.

Appointed by the Welsh Assembly Government, five Commissioners have now taken over the functions of the Council’s Executive.

Despite this unprecedented intervention in the running of the Authority, Alex Aldridge has been quick to stress that all 40 councillors still have a vital role to play in serving their own individual wards and contributing towards the democratic process.

He said, “During a positive meeting, we gave absolute assurances that we respect the role and rights of those county councillors who have been duly elected by the people of Anglesey. It’s important to make it clear that each and every councillor can still make representations on behalf of their constituents, unimpeded at all times.”

“We hope now to see all members play an integral part in helping to move the County Council forward.”

The Commissioners also emphasised that had not been sent to Anglesey to examine matters that had gone before them. There are formal and proper avenues for any concerns raised by members or officers to be examined, they explained.

Mr Aldridge added, “We are keen to continue the very positive programme we’ve inherited from the previous administration with regard to the continued provision of quality services for the people of Anglesey, particularly on the economic development front. To that end, I would personally like to thank all those who have been involved in the significant work carried out in this area.”

“I genuinely hope that the people of Anglesey have confidence in staff here within the Council, in their drive and commitment to continue to provide the level of services they rightfully expect.”

“We also look forward to regular and continued dialogue with elected members and to the day when there will be a formal handover of powers back to those who have earned the trust and support of the people of Anglesey through the ballot box.”

“At the moment, however, unless circumstances change following Ministerial deliberation we will be overseeing the provision of services here on Anglesey until at least May 2012.”
