Swansea Council could join forces with an external company to further develop the city’s Tir John landfill site.
An agreement has been made to test the market for any interest from a commercial waste company who it could go into partnership with in future years.
At present, the site has enough capacity to fulfil the tipping needs of the city until at least the end of 2012. Further work could be completed to provide the Council with enough tipping capacity until at least 2021.
The Council will be working closely with the Environment Agency to secure the most effective plan for development of the site that also considers the local environment.
The increase in recycling in the city and the reduction in waste being taken to landfill during the next ten years mean that Tir John could be run more efficiently if the Council worked with an external partner.
Cllr John Hague, Cabinet Member for the Environment in Swansea Council, said: “We want to see if there is any interest out there for a partnership approach to the future operation of Tir John.
“The introduction and success of our kerbside recycling services means we will continue to send less and less waste to landfill.
“This does not mean we don’t need landfill space and, therefore, we have to look towards how we operate Tir John more efficiently in the future.”
