Countryside Rangers and Streetscene team join forces to clean up the Llwyni Nature Reserve

Fifty five bin bags of rubbish and two trailers full of waste have been cleared recently from around the Llwyni Nature Reserve, thanks to the efforts of Flintshire County Council’s Countryside Services and Streetscene team, and a group of local volunteers.

Over two days, the teams worked hard to clear rubbish from the Llwyni Nature Reserve and the paths and roads around it.

Among the waste gathered were old bikes, old garden fencing and plant pots, garden waste, pots and pans, and concrete posts.

Senior Countryside Ranger, Gilly Seddon, said:

“I’d like to thank all those who worked hard cleaning up the Llwyni Nature Reserve over the two days. During our clean-up at Llwyni, areas of young trees, hawthorns and brambles had to be cut away to get to rubbish and will need to be kept clear to enable any removal of more rubbish in the future.

“The scrub that has been removed was vital for nesting birds, as well as being a food and nectar source, and it means that general cover has also been lost to wildlife as a result.

“It’s vital that we get the message out to everyone that dumping waste is not just an eyesore, and a health hazard – it is also significantly damaging our countryside and wildlife.”

Flintshire’s Countryside Rangers are keen to hear from volunteers to help them recreate a pond on the reserve. To volunteer and find out more, please contact Flintshire Countryside Service at Wepre Park on 01244 814931.
