Crackdown on Dog Fouling and Littering

A North Wales Council is warning people to expect a fine if they drop litter or don’t clean up after their dog.

Recent surveys from Keep Wales Tidy have shown that for the third year running Conwy County Borough is the cleanest county in Wales, however litter and dog fouling continues to be a problem on the streets.

Residents regularly say that inconsiderate dog owners are a particular concern.

Over the next few months, Conwy County Borough Council’s enforcement teams will be patrolling areas that have been identified as problem hotspots and will be issuing fixed penalty fines to anyone caught breaking the law.

The Council’s Environment & Technical Services and Regulatory Services will be joining forces to tackle the culprits who drop litter and let their dogs foul on our streets, footpaths and green spaces spoiling the quality of the local environment for everyone.

The penalty each time you drop litter or you don’t clean up after your dog is £75.

Cllr Philip Evans, Cabinet Member for Corporate and Regulatory Services said, “Council Enforcement Officers will be able to use the new Dog Control Orders to tackle this blight on our communities.  You must clean up after your dog on all land owned or maintained by Conwy County Borough Council or you’ll receive a fixed penalty of £75 or even face prosecution.”

Cllr Mike Priestley, Cabinet Member for Environment said, “The importance of clean streets cannot be overemphasised.  We will crack down on the irresponsible individuals who commit these environmental crimes and spoil our community.  Put your litter in a bin or take it home with you and clean up after your dog – it’s that simple.”

If you see someone littering or not cleaning up after their dog in your neighbourhood please fill-in the Report Fly Tipping, Litter and Dog Fouling form at: www.conwy.gov.uk/environment or phone the customer help desk on (01492) 575337.
