A joint exercise between Neath Port Talbot Council and South Wales Police has resulted in nine fixed penalty notices for littering offences.
Following complaints at a local PACT meeting, waste enforcement officers and two police community support officers joined forces to patrol Neath town centre to catch offenders and explain to the public why they were there.
During the day, nine fixed penalty notices and two dog fouling tickets were issued.
Offences included throwing away cigarettes and food and paper bags around Green Street, Queen Street and Windsor Road in the town centre.
Penalties were for £75, reduced to £50, for early payment. If not paid, a summons would be issued.
The dog fouling tickets were issued on the outskirts of town in Digby Road and Llantwit Road. They were issued under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the Dog Fouling of Land 1996.
Congratulating the team, Council Leader, Ali Thomas, said, “Neath Port Talbot has a zero tolerance policy on flytipping and littering.
“I am pleased to see waste enforcement officers and police officers working together on a problem that needs to be tackled.
“Dropping litter is an offence not only to the community but also to our staff who are expected to clean it up and I would appeal to the public to be diligent and considerate before contravening the litter law.”
“Everyone has a responsibility to keep Neath Port Talbot clean and make it a better place in which to live.”
