Three associate members from Swansea University’s Centre for Research into the English Literature and Language of Wales (CREW) have been long listed for this year’s Academi Wales Book of the Year.
The 2010 Wales Book of the Year Award, administered by the Academi with funding from the Arts Council of Wales, will be presented to the best Welsh language and English language works published in 2009 in the fields of creative writing and literary criticism.
Emyr Humphreys, Honorary Patron of CREW; Peter Lord, Research Fellow at CREW and Research Associate Jasmine Donahaye are all represented on this year’s long list of ten authors for the award.
Emyr Humphreys is one of three honorary patrons of CREW. His long listed collection of short stories The Woman at the Window (published by Seren) was assembled by Professor M Wynn Thomas, Emyr Humphreys Research Chair at CREW.
Former Swansea University PhD student Dr Jasmine Donahaye is in the running for the award with her collection of poetry Self-Portrait as Ruth (published by Salt).
Peter Lord’s Academi long listed title, The Meaning of Pictures (published by University of Wales Press) has also been long listed for the prestigious Berger Prize for British Art History 2010.
Dr Daniel Williams, Senior Lecturer in the Department of English, and Director of CREW said: “To have our honorary patron, Emyr Humphreys, research fellow and leading art historian Peter Lord, and research associate Dr Jasmine Donahaye, on this year’s Academi Book of the Year Long list underlines CREW’s position as the leading Centre for the study of Wales’s English language, literature and culture. CREW hopes that all three make it to the shortlist!”
The Short List of three English-language books and three Welsh-language books will be revealed at the Guardian Hay Festival on 6 June, 2010. The 2010 Wales Book of the Year award ceremony will be held in Cardiff on 30 June where the two winners will receive cheques of £10,000 and four runners-up will receive £1,000.
The CREW presence on this year’s long list builds on the previous successes of Professor Dai Smith’s Raymond Williams: A Warrior’s Tale (Parthian), long listed in 2009, and Daniel Williams’s Ethnicity and Cultural Authority (Edinburgh University Press) which was long listed in 2007.
