Criccieth RNLI volunteers exchange lbs for pounds in SOS challenge

Sue Millard and Carol Emery, who are both part of the RNLI fundraising team at Criccieth, are hoping to become a shadow of their former selves by embarking on a slimming challenge. The pair launched their fundraising challenge on the RNLI’s annual fundraising day, SOS Day, which fell on the 29 January.

People across Wales have taken inspiration from the SOS acronym and have raised thousands of pounds by hosting SOS events. Sue and Carol are calling their fundraiser Sponsor Our Slim and are keen to raise as much money as possible for the RNLI charity before the big weigh in on 27 March. The challenge is being supported by Porthmadog Weight Watchers’ group,

Carol and Sue are active RNLI fundraisers, working in the souvenir shop at Criccieth during the summer, and collecting money whenever and however possible.

Carol says:

‘Working as a volunteer for the RNLI is truly enjoyable, and the crew make it so easy. While we are having fun, we do fully understand and appreciate the seriousness behind it all. There’s nothing frivolous about saving lives, and raising funds in this way is the only means by which this entirely voluntary service can carry on doing so’

With the help of Alison Jones, their Weight Watchers’ leader, they have now been joined by 10 others, one of whom has already lost a magnificent 20lbs. There will be a grand celebration of the results and of the money raised on Saturday morning 27 March 2010.

Sue, who been slimming since November last year says:

‘Getting sponsorship for this has given us a real incentive to carry on, even over the Christmas and New Year holiday – now, that was hard! Both Carol and I have managed to lose over half a stone – not much, but it’s a good start.’
