Team work and good communications skills paid off for a group of North Wales Police Cadets who battled it out in an inaugural Cadet Challenge to bring home a respectable second place.
The success was even more of a feat for the team of 12 Cadets who only met each other half an hour before the challenge started at the Crogen Estate near Corwen on Saturday, September 26, when Cadets from the Army, Sea, Air and Young Firefighters battled it out in a bid to pick up the trophy.
And, from the outset the police Cadets worked together in true team spirit and won the five-a-side- football tournament held on the day. They also secured first place in the high rope challenge.
At the end of the day however it was the Air Cadets who topped the table winning four out of the five challenges set which included building a bridge over the river, pulling a trailer, river rescue and swamp crossing.
Sergeant Mel Brace is the Cadet Coordinator for North Wales Police, she said: “The Cadets displayed outstanding team building and communication skills and quickly got to grips with each event, they have made an excellent start to their career as Police Cadets.”
“As the new Cadet programme only began last week, the Cadets who competed on Saturday met each other for the first time 30 minutes before the challenge began. They had no prior briefing or training opportunities. It is a real credit to them and their skills for doing so well.”
At the end of the day, each Cadet from NWP was presented with a certificate from the High Sheriff and returned with two trophies – one for the football and one for the high ropes challenge.
Speaking about the day which was held on the Crogen Estate which is home to the High Sherriff of Clwyd, the High Sherriff’s wife Sarah Robertson said: “We were all delighted with the day and just thrilled that all the cadet forces enjoyed themselves so much.”
“Everyone behaved immaculately throughout the day.”
The NWP Cadet team was made up of nine new Cadets and three former Cadets, the latter of whom completed their programme in June. They were: Will Jones, Adam Williams, Ynyr Roberts, Josh Johnson, Jasmine Owens, Peter Davies, Stephen Williams, Lynsey Jones, Ryan Izzard, Lauritz Hirst, Michael Flynn and Amy Parry.
