Pupils at Ysgol Glan Cleddau in Haverfordwest have been praised for using their initiative when it comes to road safety.
They’ve been investigating how many of them need to cross Scarrowscant Lane on their way to school and on the way home – and how many more would cross, if there was a School Crossing Patrol.
The pupils and Pembrokeshire County Council’s Road Safety Unit are also intending to do vehicle speed checks on the road, which is already a 20mph zone.
The children’s research will be sent to the Road Safety Unit and if it shows that a School Crossing Patrol is needed, the Unit will advertise for one in the local press.
John Gobbi, County Road Safety Education Officer, suggested to the pupils that they carry out investigations after they wrote to Councillor Huw George requesting a school crossing patrol.
“The children’s School Council should be congratulated on showing a great deal of initiative with regard to road safety in their locality,” said Councillor George, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People, Learning and the Welsh Language.
* Pembrokeshire County Council is looking to advertise for a Relief School Crossing Patrol to cover the Haverfordwest area. If you are interested in being a School Crossing Patrol please ring John Gobbi, County Road Safety Education Officer, on 01437 775144. Uniform and training will be provided.
