Pupils at Ysgol Clawdd Offa will have their tastebuds tickled when the cooking bus returns to Denbighshire next month.
The bus will be visiting the school in Prestatyn from February 7-10. The giant, hi-tech articulated lorry opens out into a spectacular purpose-built kitchen and classroom where qualified food teachers give pupils, teachers and the community a taste of quality cooking.
Pupils climb aboard for lessons under the expert eye of an advisory teacher. There will also be training for the teachers and some members of the wider school community and parents, so they can continue helping youngsters cook with confidence.
Some of the dishes that could be made onboard the bus during this visit include roast vegetable couscous salad, vegetable samosas, lunchbox wraps, fresh fruit salad and herby cheese scones. Pupils also cover key aspects of food education including nutrition, food safety and hygiene and food preparation skills. The core of all lessons is hands-on cooking.
Paula Roberts, Denbighshire’s Healthy Schools Co-ordinator, said: “The Cooking Bus is a tremendous way of getting pupils interested in healthy foods in a fun and interactive way.
“The bus has been to Denbighshire before and has always proved to be a big hit with pupils and teachers. I hope that Clawdd Offa pupils enjoy the experience and get them more interested in healthy foods as part of a nutritionally balanced diet.
The Cooking Bus, funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, is run by The Focus on Food Campaign, the leading organisation to support the teaching of cooking in schools across the UK.
