The new-look Wrexham Library opened with a bang on March 22 when Ruth Jones cut the ribbon to allow the public in to enjoy its new and improved services – and over 1,000 customers came within the first hour!
The festivities didn’t just last that one day though, this official opening kicked off a whole week of activities for people of all ages and interests.
Literature lovers enjoyed two events on Wednesday, March 24 at which authors writing in both the English and Welsh languages, treated the audience to readings from their books and also from pieces they had written about Wrexham and the library especially for the occasion.
One of the authors, Holly Howitt (critically-praised author of Dinner Time and The Schoolboy) was impressed with the library and the event, saying: ‘Thank you for the event you organised on Wednesday. I had a great time. I hope the new library continues to be as successful and visited as it already has been.’
VIP Children’s Day was held on March 24 and was a resounding success. Wrexham’s Early Years Librarians held two sessions throughout the day, inviting children that attend their regular sessions for children living in community first areas, Key Stage One children, and the underfives and their families. The children enjoyed a great day, with story and rhyme times, play dough and crafts.
The Children’s Librarian also organised storytelling sessions for Key Stage two children and 150 pupils turned out to enjoy stories, tours of the library and a taster session on the library’s latest facility, BFI Mediatheque.
March 25 was Information Day and members of the public dropped in to the library to learn about researching their family history, the basics of computing and using the Internet. The library offers courses like these throughout the year, so if you want to learn a new skill on the computer – no matter how basic it may seem – contact Wrexham Library on 01978 292090.
