Caerphilly county borough council has been removing unnecessary road signs across the area to help reduce the amount of ‘sign clutter’ that can be a distraction to motorists.
The authority is leading the way in Wales in its efforts to rid the area of these unnecessary signs and highway staff have been busy uprooting the offending posts to help create a clearer street scene.
“We have now removed over 2,100 signs throughout the county borough and the scheme has helped improve highway safety as well as enhancing the visual impact of the area,” said Cllr Rob Gough, CCBC cabinet member for transportation and planning.
National campaigners are calling for 70% of road signs on rural roads to be removed and are now urging Highway Authorities across the country to carry out ‘clutter audits’ to identify signs that are not needed.
The authority has paid particular attention to sensitive areas such as routes around historic locations and roads running through some of the county borough’s breathtaking countryside.
