Cwmbran’s 20,000 Ryder Cup boost

A Torfaen golf course is benefiting from a £20,000 package of improvements thanks to Wales hosting the biggest golf tournament in the world.

Cash for the improvements at the nine-hole Llanyravon Golf Course in Cwmbran has come from the Welsh Assembly’s Ryder Cup Wales Legacy Fund.

Work has already begun on the course, which is owned by Torfaen Council, and is due to be completed before the end of the year.

It includes better drainage for three greens, improvements to six bunkers, new signs for tee areas and the main entrance, new flags, new winter tee mats and a new practice area.

The size of the greens will also be reduced to make them more challenging to around 20,000 golfers who use the course every year.

Councillor John Cunningham, Executive Member for Operational Services, said: “The improvements will not only benefit golfers who already play there but will also attract new players as well.

“I’m delighted that the benefits of Wales hosting the Ryder cup are spreading out to local communities.”

Dave Woodman, the PGA golf professional at the course, said: “The money will a big difference in improving the golf playing experience for everyone.”

The Ryder Cup Wales Legacy Fund is a £2m investment into grassroots golf provided by the Welsh Assembly Government as part of the winning 2010 Ryder Cup bid. The fund aims to create more opportunities for people across Wales to take part in the game.

In October this year, the eyes of the world will be on Newport for three days when the Ryder Cup arrives at the Celtic Manor Resort.

Around 45,000 visitors are expected to attend the competition each day.
