Popular Welsh language soap Pobol y Cwm is going back to its roots with a special visit to Cwm Gwendraeth during the week of 22 to 26 February 2010.
The main aim of the visit, which is a project between BBC Cymru Wales, S4C and Menter Cwm Gwendraeth, is to build a personal relationship between Pobol y Cwm and various communities throughout Wales.
Keith Jones, Head of Programmes (Welsh and New Media) for BBC Wales, says: “Pobol y Cwm is owned by the whole of Wales and our characters are an integral part of every community.
“The support of areas such as the Gwendraeth valley has been central to the development of the series over the years and we’re extremely proud of that.”
The visit of the series is an opportunity for the audience and the public in general to meet those actors who bring Cwmderi’s characters alive in various businesses across the valley – whilst shopping at the Farchnad Fach in Tumble or over a cuppa in Caffi Cynnes in Pontyberem.
In addition, there will be a quiz night at the home of Tumble rugby club and an evening of entertainment in Pontyberem Memorial Hall where many of Pobol y Cwm’s stars will come together to perform in this evening of cawl and song, which will be presented by local boy, and well known referee, Nigel Owens.
Like Nigel, another local is the actor, Gwyn Elfyn, who’s played Denzil Rees in Pobol y Cwm since the early Eighties.
He’s pleased that the series is going out into the community: “It’s important that, as actors, we interact with the audience and that they get the opportunity to get to know us better.”
Pobol y Cwm has had a strong relationship with the Gwendraeth valley for years – Caffi Cynnes was the café in the original opening titles.
