Cycling and the City

Cardiff Council is inviting everyone to attend a series of events as part of its consultation plan to improve cycling routes around Cardiff.

The events will take place in a city centre shop space at 107 Queen Street, opposite the Capitol Shopping Centre on the following dates: Saturday 16 October from 10am to 5pm, Thursday 21 October from 10am to 7pm and Saturday 23 October 10am to 5pm.  The shop will host a number of interesting and interactive activities to present the draft plan, and to record feedback.

As Wales’ Sustainable Travel City, part of Cardiff’s aim is to keep the city moving by changing the way people travel. Cardiff Council has developed a programme to reduce congestion, pollution and provide accessible alternatives to using cars.

A strategic cycle network plan has been drafted after consultation with residents, community organisations, cycling organisations and groups. Following investigation of existing cycle routes around the city, Cardiff Council also want to invite cyclists and non-cyclists to give their opinion on the draft plan.

People of all ages and cycling abilities are encouraged to visit the shop on Queen Street to give their views and join in the fun. The activities will include a cycle performance piece, cycle chic display, cycle stories, cycle training workshops, Dr Bike session, maintenance and repair workshops and a video booth to record peoples’ thoughts on the cycle route plan.

The activities will be advertised around Cardiff using a bicycle based exhibition which will cycle around the city. Twitter updates can be followed on @Cardiffcycling.

Executive Member for Traffic and Transportation, Cllr Delme Bowen, said: “Cycling is a really healthy way of getting around and can also be an enjoyable and quick way of travelling. Sustainable Travel City is a vital scheme that involves a number of different components, all working together to keep our city moving and pollution decreasing. It is absolutely essential for our future success and we welcome any feedback from people with an opinion on the cycle network strategy.”

For those unable to make the city centre events, there is an opportunity to complete a survey which asks Cardiff residents for feedback on the draft cycle strategy. The survey is available online at www.ark-lab.co.uk/survey.The closing date for completing the survey online is October 29 2010.
