‘Cymdeithas Direct Action Threatens Welsh Language Support’

Suzy_DaviesCommenting on reports that representatives of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg have occupied part of the Welsh Government’s Cardiff headquarters, days after the group’s chair was arrested in connection with the daubing of paint on the same offices, Suzy Davies AM, Shadow Minister for the Welsh Language, said:

“In recent years, Cymdeithas yr Iaith has been engaging with politicians, the public and others in an impressive manner, but this juvenile behaviour risks undoing years of good work.

“The Welsh language needs champions like Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg, but their criminal activities of trespass and graffiti do damage to the cause of the Welsh language.

“We understand there may be frustration that more needs to be done to promote and protect the Welsh language, but this is not the way to show it.

“There is no excuse for these crimes, which threaten to seriously undermine the credibility Cymdeithas had worked hard to build.”
