People who hadn’t ridden a bike in years got back in the saddle at the launch of a new cycling group in the Cynon Valley.
The Sustrans Cycling Group – launched at Michael Sobell Sports Centre, Aberdare (February 12) – will meet from the centre every Friday from 11am-2pm. Most people who went along to the launch had not cycled for a long time, or were nervous about trying.
But they were soon back on track when they had the opportunity to ride around The Ynys using the side-by-side tandem, trike, go-kart and mountain bikes or try out the slalem course in Sobell’s sports hall.
Eleanor Rothwell, Sustrans’ Mentro Allan Project Co-ordinator for Rhondda Cynon Taf, said: “Thanks to the expert help from the team at Cwm Cycling, there were big smiles all round as people achieved beyond what they expected.
“A big thank-you to everyone who took part and helped out on the day. Cwm Cycling and the staff at the Sobell Centre did a great job of helping things run smoothly and making people feel welcome, as did all the Mentro Allan volunteers. Feedback from participants was very positive.”
Cllr Robert Bevan, Rhondda Cynon Taf Cabinet Member for Culture and Recreation, said: “Encouraging people to live more active lifestyles is a priority for the Council, so I am delighted that initiatives such as this are being set up in Rhondda Cynon Taf and are proving popular.”
Cyclists and walkers of all ages and abilities can take part in a range of outdoor activities across Rhondda Cynon Taf in 2010, thanks to Sustrans’ Mentro Allan programme.
Activities on offer will include mountain biking for beginners, cycling lessons for beginners and walking with the Aberdare Walking Group. For more information on any of the activities above, please contact Eleanor on 0788 755 1303 or email: [email protected]
Nordic walking will be launched on Thursday, February 25 at Dare Valley Country Park, Aberdare. The group will meet every Thursday at midday.
There will be a chance to choose from longer, uphill walks or gentler walks on the flat, led by experienced leaders and instructors. Walking poles and refreshments will be provided free.
