Daniel, 12, qualifies for Welsh swim squad

Pembroke schoolboy Daniel Thomas has qualified for the Welsh regional squad after taking part in the Swim Swansea Long Course Open recently

Daniel, 12, took meet records and gold medals, as well as qualifying in both 1500 metres and 400 metres events with times of 18:45.07 and 5:24.44 respectively.

He joins Ffion Davies, Kelsey Williams, Isabelle Davies and Carys Thomas from Pembrokeshire who have made Welsh Regional Squad selection standards.

Daniel trains with Paul Dowey, Pembrokeshire Leisure’s swimming development coach in Pembrokeshire Performance squad.

He started swimming at the age of six at Pembroke and District swimming club and was taught first by Tim Dyson in Pembroke Leisure Centre’s Learn to Swim programme and then by the Centre’s School Swimming Coordinator, Trina Bowen.

Daniel was picked for his first gala by David Thompson from Pembroke Swimming club who later became one of his coaches. He has also had coaching support from Francis Bunker and Keith Thompson

In April last year Daniel made the selection standards for Pembrokeshire Performance squad where he has made use of the full-time swimming development coach, Paul Dowey.

Daniel is now preparing for the Welsh Summer Nationals in August.
