Daredevil Maggie jumps to it for children in Kenyan orphanage

When it comes to lending a helping hand, care worker Maggie Wynne is the first to leap into action.

And when she leaps it’s usually from a very high place.

Not content with three bungee jumps, Maggie – who admits to being “fifty plus” – is now planning a parachute jump out of an aircraft.

The care support worker, who lives in Beacon Road, Gwersyllt, near Wrexham, works for the Pendine Park care organisation.

Maggie, who works at their Penybryn home which specialises in supporting younger people with brain injuries, said: The feeling you get when you are coming down is fantastic,” said Maggie.

She’s raised hundreds of pounds already with three daredevil bungee jumps, one at Rossett and two at the Wheatsheaf pub car park in Gwersyllt where she is a regular.

This time her aim is to raise money the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Education Centre (OLPHEC) is an Education Centre in the Nyeri district of  Kenya.

They  provide education, health care, food, shelter, and clothing to over 200 children.

The money raised will go towards a solar powered irrigation system to grow crops to feed the children.

Maggie heard about the orphanage following a visit there by the proprietors of Pendine Park, Mario and Gill Kreft.

She said: “They do fantastic work at the centre, it’s a really worthwhile cause.”

Daughters Sarah, 27, and Julie, 25,  and  partner Darren Evans, who works at JCB, are very supportive.

Maggie used to work for bakers and confectioners Ecclestons and at the Ruthin Road Gerrards bakery in Wrexham before she settled into full-time care work.

“I’m still planning the parachute jump because I’ll have to raise some money first before I make the jump, from an airfield in the Oswestry area. I’m hoping I will be able to do it sometime after my holiday in Tenerife this May.

“The parachute normally involves jumping out strapped to the instructor so I’ll be hoping he’s tall dark and handsome!” said Maggie.

Tracy Cuthill, the manage of Penybryn, paid tribute to Maggie’s dedication and daredevil spirit.

She said: “I think Maggie’s caring attitude just underlines the fact that we have a really excellent group of people working here. It goes to show that the people at Pendine Park are really nice people.”
