David Tress exhibition – Chasing Sublime Light

Oriel Ynys Môn’s 2010 art exhibitions’ programme opens with an unmissable exhibition of works by David Tress, one of Britain’s foremost landscape painters.

The exhibition opens on January 16 until February 21, 2010.

‘Chasing Sublime Light’ is an exhibition of paintings and drawings which explores the artist’s experience of travelling in the mountainous landscapes of northern Britain. The work in the exhibition is a direct response to these landscapes as they appear now, but the roots of the project are in journeys made over two hundred years ago by artists who pioneered the discovery of the rugged landscapes of the north. These artists included J M W Turner, Thomas Girtin and Paul Sandby, and they were travelling in search of landscapes that would revolutionise painting in the Romantic period: landscapes of the ‘Sublime’.

‘Chasing Sublime Light’ is a touring exhibition of paintings and drawings which was first shown in March 2008 and will complete its 3 year journey to 13 venues throughout Britain early in 2011.

David Tress was born in London and showed and early interest in painting, drawing and natural history. After studying at Harrow College of Art he went on to graduate in Fine Arts from Trent Polytechnic.

David came to live in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire in 1976, the landscape of which forms the subject of many of his paintings.

Using a range of aggressive techniques such as scraping, cutting or scarring the paint – combined with his dramatic and bold application of colour – he creates the vibrant and majestic landscapes which truly distinguish his work.

David has exhibited widely, in Wales, England, Ireland, France, Holland and the United States of America and has works in public collections such as The National Museum of Wales, The Contemporary Art Society for Wales and The National Library of Wales.

Leisure Portfolio Holder, Cllr Goronwy Parry said, “This is an exciting start to the 2010 exhibition’s programme at Oriel Ynys Môn. David Tress lives up to his name as an artist who brings the natural world alive through a most dramatic and striking style”.

“The energy captured in David’s work is inspiring – it shows his empathy and connection with the landscape and the forces of nature surrounding us”, said Pat West, Principal Officer – Museums, Culture and Archives, Isle of Anglesey County Council.
