Carwyn Jones should ‘face up to his role as First Minister’ and ‘stop picking fights’ with the UK Government.
During First Minister’s Questions, the Leader of the Welsh Conservatives in the Assembly has also accused Mr Jones of lacking the trust of businesses across Wales and focusing on political posturing rather than economic growth.
Andrew RT Davies’ comments follow the First Minister’s recent letter to Downing Street in which he criticised the Prime Minister’s decision to veto EU treaty change. Weeks later he admitted to the Assembly he ‘probably’ would have done exactly the same thing.
It also follows a catalogue of factual errors made by the First Minister, including a refusal to accept that no health board had met his major A&E target and a blunder on export figures. In December Mr Jones said 50% of Welsh exports go to the EU, when in reality the figure is closer to 39%.
Mr Davies said: “It has become quite clear that the First Minister is much more concerned with political posturing than the real issues facing Wales.
“Time and again Carwyn Jones either refuses to answer the important questions put to him, or gets it wrong when he does. How can businesses across Wales have faith in a First Minister who can’t quote export figures properly, or recognise the huge costs associated with bidding for procurement contracts?
“All his efforts are put into political point-scoring and politically motivated letters. Even then, he doesn’t believe what he’s written.
“It’s time Mr Jones faced up to his role as First Minister, stopped picking fights, and put transparency, honesty and economic growth at the top of his agenda.”
