Commenting on the news that the Welsh Government has decided to offer no objection to Nominet’s bid for top level domain names .wales and .cymru , Suzy Davies AM, Shadow Minister for Heritage, said:
“I congratulate Nominet on their success in achieving this stage of proceedings.
“I am pleased that we have some clarity after a period of controversy over successive Ministers’ involvement, lack of engagement with other interested parties and the Welsh Government’s inability to give timely information to Assembly Members.
“Online transactions are an increasingly lucrative way for Welsh businesses to boost orders, so making it easier to identify Wales-based suppliers should help promote the Welsh economy.
“The use of a geographic domain name, especially in both languages should highlight Wales as a distinctive place to do business.
“I’m very pleased that applications for both domains are going ahead and look forward to hearing whether public money was, in fact, needed to support the dual bid.
“I hope that the successful bidder will use this unique opportunity to support the use of Welsh online, to recognise the cultural identity of Wales and to bring sustainable, good quality jobs to areas with high unemployment.”
