Welsh Conservatives have condemned the First Minister following an admission that he ‘probably’ would have acted in exactly the same way as the Prime Minister during EU negotiations in December.
In his closing speech at the end of a European Programmes debate in the Assembly on Tuesday January 10th, Carwyn Jones said “I think I probably would’ve followed what the Prime Minister did. I wouldn’t have signed up to it.”
In a letter to the Prime Minister last month, also released to the media, Mr Jones heavily criticised the Prime Minister’s decision to veto treaty change, saying “I believe this fundamentally threatens Wales’ national interest.”
Shadow Minister for European Affairs, Byron Davies AM, said:
“The First Minister has finally shown his true colours. Despite all the noisy rhetoric, he’s accidentally admitted he would have done exactly the same thing as the Prime Minister.
“Just like his boss Mr Miliband, Carwyn Jones is happy to criticise repeatedly, but has absolutely no alternative.
“His admission during a speech in the Senedd is exceptionally hypocritical. How can he believe in anything he wrote to Number Ten – in that much-hyped letter – if he would have done exactly the same thing?
“It was clearly not in our national interest to sign more of our sovereignty over to the EU and I’m glad Carwyn Jones agrees. He should explain this to the people of Wales and constructive work with the UK Government should now be top of his agenda.”
