Davies: Labour must be constructive over Europe

Welsh Conservatives have called on Labour to put an end to ‘political point-scoring’ over Europe and engage instead in ‘constructive talks’ with the UK Government in the Welsh national interest.

Shadow Minister for European Affairs, Byron Davies AM, has made the call during a government debate on European Programmes.

Mr Davies welcomed the UK Government’s decision to exercise its veto during discussions in Brussels in December and highlighted Labour’s poor record of delivery in utilising European funding in Wales.

He said: “Today’s government debate is all about cheap political point-scoring.

“It is incredibly disappointing that the Welsh Labour Government really believes that the veto should not have been exercised, when it was clearly not in our national interest to sign more of our sovereignty over to the EU – most notably control of our purse strings.

“Constructive work with the UK Government should now be top of the First Minister’s agenda. That’s what’s in the national interest – not worthless finger-pointing.

“Successive Welsh Governments have failed to deliver effective programmes with EU funding. Even a Labour MEP admits the first round of funding ‘wasn’t spent wisely’. It’s time to stop digressing and start delivering.”
