Commenting on Lloyds TSB’s decision to close its call centre in Bridgend, Shadow Minister for Business Andrew RT Davies AM, said:
“This is hugely damaging news for Bridgend.
“Losing 700 jobs from the town is both alarming and harmful. The Welsh Labour government must now make it an urgent priority to speak with Lloyds TSB and discuss the reasons behind its decision.
“They need to make sure the company’s redeployment plans are properly put into action and all necessary support is given to those involved.
“This is the latest jobs blow for the area and follows Sony’s devastating closure in 2005. While it is not the first big loss to hit Bridgend in recent years, Labour now needs to make doubly sure it is absolutely the last.
“The shocking news plainly highlights the pressing need for this government to get the ball rolling on its economic policy immediately.
“Where are the enterprise zones?
“What’s happening to the Economic Renewal Programme?
“Encouraging inward investment is vital and Labour must now work hard to promote Bridgend and its surrounding areas.”
