Plaid Cymru’s Candidate for the Cynon Valley, Dafydd Trystan Davies has issued his concerns about the impact the New year VAT increase will have on pensioners in Wales.
Dafydd Trystan Davies says that many pensioners are already struggling financially and often face the very difficult choice between heating and eating. The financial pressure on pensioners has been even more difficult as a result of having such a bitterly cold winter period. It is expected that the average pensioner will see around £216.50 less a year as a result of the Conservative – Lib Dem plans.
Plaid’s Cynon Valley Candidate Dafydd Trystan Davies said:
“Clearly there are already a lot of pressures on pensioners financially. At a time when the weather is so cold rising prices on oil, petrol and gas all add to individuals seeing their income stretched to its limit.
“The rise in VAT will have an even more drastic impact on the ability of pensioners to stay warm and stay fed. When you imagine the impact that losing around £216.50 will have on some of the poorest and most vulnerable people in our communities it is quite concerning.
“Once again it appears as if the Conservative and Lib Dem MPs in Westminster are making decisions with little to no consideration for how they will impact on people here in Wales.”
