The Welsh Conservatives have welcomed the findings of a BBC Cymru Wales/ICM poll, which shows that public support for an independent Wales has fallen to just 7%.
Andrew RT Davies AM, Leader of the Welsh Conservatives in the National Assembly, said, “The Welsh Conservatives are the party of the Union and we’re pleased that these poll figures show the public feel the same way.
“Wales is a bold and innovative country, which plays a very positive role within the United Kingdom.
“The arguments for the United Kingdom are clear. The Union has been a cultural and political strength which advantages all corners of it.
“Together, the UK has real global clout with a permanent seat at the UN Security Council, a lead role in NATO, the Commonwealth, in Europe and beyond.
“We’re richer, because inside the United Kingdom, Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland and England are the seventh-richest economy on the planet and one of the world’s biggest trading powers.
“These poll findings confirm that the nationalists’ obsession with independence places them firmly on the fringes of Welsh politics, while we will continue to focus on the issues that matter to the people of Wales like rising Council Tax, schools, jobs and the NHS.”
