Responding to today’s news that the Older Person’s Commissioner is to conduct a review into the care of elderly people in hospital, Shadow Health Minister Andrew RT Davies AM said:
“This inquiry is welcome and must ensure older people are treated with dignity and respect while in hospital.
“The Assembly Government and NHS trusts must ensure patients – many of whom will be vulnerable – receive appropriate care in an appropriate setting and that this care is comparable across the country.
“This review must be comprehensive, and identify areas of concern – including the ongoing scandal of mixed sex wards which the Assembly Government has failed to adequately address.
“The dignity of older people is also being compromised by a crisis in NHS staffing levels, due to recruitment problems.”
