“The Welsh Government should turn words into action and ‘ink in’ a start date for work on an improved M4”.
The call, from the Welsh Conservatives, follows the UK Government’s response to the Silk Commission – and confirmation of borrowing powers.
Welsh Conservatives have long campaigned for an M4 relief road, which remains essential to ease congestion on the main arterial route through South Wales.
Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Andrew RT Davies AM, said, “The dust has settled on the Conservative-led coalition’s landmark announcement – now it’s time for a start date on work to improve the M4.
“The tools have been provided. Now it’s up to Carwyn Jones and Welsh Labour to get on with the job.
“Borrowing powers provide immense potential; not just for the M4 – but for infrastructure developments right across Wales.
“Welsh business doesn’t need excuses for action – it needs a hands-on First Minister willing to work hard to help.
“The UK Government has made it clear an M4 upgrade can happen as soon as possible. I want Carwyn Jones to name a date for the first earth to be dug – and stick to it.”
Shadow Minister for Transport, Byron Davies AM, said, “Labour ministers should show their ambition for the Welsh economy and ink in a start date immediately.
“The Conservative-led coalition has delivered. Now it’s time for Carwyn Jones and Welsh Labour to do the same.
“Views expressed in the government’s recent M4 consultation should form part of a final plan – but a start date for improvements must now be forthcoming.”
