Carers from across Rhondda Cynon Taf got active and enjoyed some well-deserved time to themselves at Dare Valley Country Park, Aberdare, in a unique event held as part of this year’s RCT Mental Health Week celebrations.
They were joined by service users and staff from the Council’s Mental Health Service at the event, which was run jointly by RCT Carers Support Project and the Council’s Mental Health Independent Living Service, to raise awareness of mental health issues and challenge stigma.
Carers, service users and staff had the opportunity to get active to improve their mental and physical well-being and ‘Walk a Mile for Mental Health’ through the Country Park.
Those who attended the day also had the chance to try orienteering, Nordic walking, archery, cycling and the climbing wall. The good weather also meant that people could enjoy guided walks in the countryside.
Rhondda Cynon Taf’s Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Well-being, Councillor Mike Forey, said: “The stressful, but vital, role carried out by carers of all ages can often lead to them becoming vulnerable to isolation, stress and mental health problems – issues Rhondda Cynon Taf Council is determined to prevent.
“Carers who attended the day said it really lifted their spirits and they enjoyed the chance to talk to other people and relax.”
Mental Health Week (October 9-15) is now well established in Rhondda Cynon Taf. Individuals and organisations involved aim to raise awareness of mental health issues and promote good mental health.
Events held across the county borough this year included activity days, a social evening and a ‘Living Library’, with local people talking about their experiences of dealing with mental ill health.
