Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has hit out at yesterday’s decision by Denbighshire County Council to close Ysgol Llanbedr, near Ruthin.
Darren, who has been campaigning alongside parents, staff and pupils to keep the rural school open, is disappointed that decision makers have failed to listen to the public.
Denbighshire’s cabinet met today and approved proposals to close the school on August 31st this year.
Darren said:
“This is heart-breaking news for all the parents, pupils and staff who have been tirelessly campaigning to save the school since the proposals regarding a possible closure were first mooted last year.
“I emphasised from the start the need for decision makers at Denbighshire to listen carefully to the opinions of local people and to consider the social contribution of the school to the local community.
“A consultation may have been carried out, but clearly the views of the locals have been largely disregarded.
“The decision is now likely to be referred by the Church in Wales to the Education Minister for consideration. I very much welcome this and hope that the Minister will take on board local views and recognise the unique, faith provision which Ysgol Llanbedr provides.”
