Dragon Sport in Denbighshire has been identified by Sport Wales as the most successful and top performing in North Wales, with almost 11,000 participations by primary school aged youngsters in school and community clubs, taking part in a wide range of fun sporting activities over the past year such as golf, tennis, rugby and cricket.
Dragon Sport is a Sport Wales initiative funded by the National Lottery, and is designed to offer 7-11 year olds fun and enjoyable sporting opportunities.
Denbighshire’s Leisure Services department, which co-ordinates the scheme across the county currently has all primary schools signed up to the project and 30 community clubs running
Denbighshire is also recognised for the depth and quality of the programme for the last academic year.
The Council’s 5 x 60 sports programme for secondary pupils also comes in for high praise as the top performing scheme in Wales for the academic year 08/09 with 18,000 participations. But it gets better, as the figures for 09/10 exceeded numbers and breadth of programme again with more than 21,000 participations.
Cabinet Lead Member with responsibility for Leisure, Councillor Morfudd Jones, said: “I am delighted that Denbighshire has been recognised as the best performing council for its Dragon Sport provision and that of the 5 x 60 scheme for secondary school pupils.
“I would like to congratulate Denbighshire Leisure Services staff for providing such a comprehensive scheme for our young people to enjoy and the schools for working with Leisure Services to ensure its success.
“We aim to continue to improve the sport provision we provide for our youngsters which will give them the opportunity to try out a wide variety of sports and activities as well as provide them with regular exercise – giving them a great start in staying fit and healthy for life!”
