Work is now starting on the next phase of the £5million Denbigh Flood Relief Management Scheme which will see a new culvert under Smithfield Road and Lenten Pool. This scheme has been made possible by funding from the EU Convergence fund managed by the Welsh European Funding Office (WEFO).
The work is due to last for five months and will involve replacing the old and crumbling culvert that runs underneath the roads with a much larger culvert. It will protect homes and businesses in the area from the threat of flooding for future generations.
A tributary of the River Clwyd, Henllan Brook, runs west to east through extremely old culverts underneath many of Denbigh’s streets. Some sections are collapsing and would not be able to cope in the event of a 1 in 100 year event – a standard planning guideline used by experts to establish the best level of protection.
Denbighshire County Council awarded this phase of the scheme to McPhillips (Wellington) Ltd. Martin Wright Associates are responsible for managing the project, design work and supervising the contract for the construction works related to the scheme.
Councillor Sharon Frobisher, Cabinet Lead Member for Environment, said: “We know there will be disruptions for road users at various points throughout the scheme, particularly when this next phase starts in the Smithfield Road and Lenten Pool areas of the town, but I think most will agree it is a major but much needed scheme to protect the homes and businesses from the threat of flooding in the future.”
Local schools have been invited to take part in projects relating to the scheme and in line with the curriculum.
