Denbighshire’s Beach Lifeguards swung into action on Saturday when two young swimmers from Flintshire got into difficulty off Rhyl. The pair were swimming in the bathing zone, under the watchful eye of lifeguards, Nathan Edwards-Hughes and Tom Glover.
The lifeguards saw that the two were getting quite far out and starting to struggle. Nathan entered the water and swam out to assist them whilst Tom informed the team of the situation, from the shore. The Rhyl Coastguard Rescue Team and RNLI Inshore Lifeboat were also requested to back up the lifeguard in the water, but Nathan managed to get the pair ashore as the boat was launching.
Ian Olson Coastal Facilities Officer explained that the designated bathing zones ensure that lifeguards can monitor swimmers should they get into difficulty.
“Our lifeguards were able to spot a situation before it developed into something more serious and take action to prevent anyone from coming to harm.
“Trained lifeguards patrol the beaches in Rhyl and Prestatyn from Whit to the first week in September and people are encouraged to swim between the Red and Yellow flags within the bathing zones.”
