Denbighshire County Council deals with severe winter weather

Teams of staff from Denbighshire County Council have been working tirelessly to deal with the first heavy snowfall this winter.

Gritting teams had been out and about at 3pm and 8pm last night (Thursday), as well as 3am this morning, due to the forecast of sub-zero temperatures. About 300 tonnes of salt were used overnight, and stocks remain healthy at the moment.

Heavy snow started to fall in the county at around 7.45am today (Friday), with the heaviest snowfalls reported in the north of the county, around St Asaph and the A55 corridor.  Highways staff and police worked together to ensure that major routes were running freely by about 10.30am.

Work has already started on minor roads in the county and the council’s Public Realm staff and stand-by crews have been drafted in to help clear snow from pavements in and around town centres.

All roads in the county are passable with care.

A number of the county’s schools were closed due to the snow and the decision to close was taken by individual headteachers who assessed the situation and considered the health and safety of pupils before taking the decision to close.

Ruthin Library was also closed. These included:

  • Denbigh High School
  • Ysgol Betws GG
  • Ysgol Twm o’r Nant
  • Ysgol Bro Elwern
  • Ysgol Dinas Bran
  • Ysgol Heulfre

Councillor Sharon Frobisher, Cabinet Lead Member for Environment, said: “Although possible snow showers had been forecast, when heavy falls of snow fall during a short period, problems can be caused, especially at peak traffic flow times.  However, our staff had been out treating the roads in readiness for the cold temperatures and staff have worked tirelessly to deal with the snow situation as it developed during the rush hour this morning.

“With the cold weather forecast to continue and the potential for more snow, we will have crews out and about working over the weekend and we will be closely monitoring weather forecasts over the coming days”.
