Denbighshire keeps Council Tax low

Denbighshire County Council has agreed its budget for the 2011/2012 financial year and has reaffirmed its commitment to keeping council tax increases low.

At a meeting at County Hall, Ruthin today (Tuesday), councillors agreed a 2.9% rise in council tax.  This increase does not include the police and the town/community council elements. The budget will now be formally set on 22 February at a special meeting of the council.

The proposals have created over £6m of savings without significant reductions in front line services whilst allowing additional resources to be directed towards our priority areas; demographic change, roads and flood defences, modernising education and regeneration.

Councillor Julian Thompson- Hill, Cabinet Lead Member for Finance, said: “The 2.9% increase in council tax in Denbighshire is one of the lowest council tax increases in North Wales. From the start, councillors have expressed a strong need to keep council tax increases low, and that is also what the public wants to see.

“We know the position for 2012/2013 could be even tighter than the budget we have agreed today and this will mean that the Council will have to continue looking at making significant efficiency savings for several years to come.”
