Denbighshire primary school – I CAN

A primary school in Meliden, Denbighshire, is the first school in Wales to gain ‘I CAN Primary Talk Accreditation’ at Enhanced Level.

Ysgol Melyd has been involved in an exciting initiative working with the Children’s Communication Charity, I CAN.  I CAN has produced a staff development and school transformation package called Primary Talk. The school has achieved Enhanced Level Status in supporting all children including those with delayed communication development and moderate difficulties.

Accreditors from the children’s community charity, I CAN visited Ysgol Melyd recently to assess the school’s portfolio of work.

Ysgol Melyd, which has a Language Resourced Provision on site, was congratulated on the support provided for pupils with Speech, Language and Communication Needs.

The accreditors praised Ysgol Melyd as a school with ‘resources and staff with the skills and knowledge to provide an inclusive communication environment for children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs’.

The school prides itself on the high standards of specialist support it provides for pupils of all ages.

Chair of Governors, Cllr Rhiannon Hughes, said, ‘We are delighted to be the first school in Wales to receive this Accreditation and I would like to congratulate all the staff for their hard work and innovation in bringing this award to Ysgol Melyd.’

Cabinet Lead Member for Education, Eryl Williams, said, “This is a great achievement for Ysgol Melyd. Communication is a vital life skill. Learning, literacy, building relationships and emotional development all rest on a child’s ability to communicate.  The hard work of the staff and school community thoroughly deserves to be recognised.  This accreditation shows that their aim of providing a communication rich environment which acknowledges the importance of visual learning so that pupils may flourish has been achieved.”
