Denbighshire pupils win a trip to the European Parliament

A group of 24 pupils, aged between 16 and 18, from Denbighshire schools have won an essay competition with a European theme and will now be heading off for a two night stay in Strasbourg and the opportunity to work and debate a series of topical issues with over 500 students from across the EU at the European Parliament.

The competition, organised locally by Europe Direct Llangollen, is funded and run by the European Parliament with additional funding from DCC and the competition is open to students in both Flintshire and Denbighshire.

This year, the competition asked the pupils to write an essay on ‘What do you think the European Union’s priorities should be for 2011 and why?’

A panel of independent judges selected the winning entries from pupils at Ysgol Brynhyfryd, St Brigid’s. Ysgol Glan Clwyd, Denbigh High School, Prestatyn High School and Ysgol Dinas Bran.

Before the trip, the students will attend an award ceremony at County Hall, Ruthin on 10 March, which will be hosted by Chair of Denbighshire, Councillor Meirick Lloyd Davies.

The students will be travelling with representatives from Europe Direct Llangollen.
