Denbighshire school celebrates quality standard achievement

Ysgol Twm o’r Nant in Denbigh has become the first school in Denbighshire to be awarded the new Quality Standard from the Welsh Assembly Government.

The Quality Standard, which replaces the Quality Mark, has been developed specifically for Wales.  It has five standards common to all sectors which replace the 10 elements of the Quality Mark. The five standards focus on:

  • identifying the scale of learner needs
  • developing a strategy and delivery plan for the whole organisation to improve on literacy and numeracy
  • delivery i.e. staff, resources, teaching programmes and strategies employed
  • procedures for planning, monitoring and reviewing the progress of the learner
  • monitoring and evaluating the impact of the Strategy and Development Plan

Headteacher, Geraint Davies, said, “We are delighted to receive this award and are proud to be the first in Denbighshire.  This rounds off our 50th anniversary celebrations really well!”

Instead of the criteria for each standard there are requirements and examples of possible sources of evidence. The Quality Standard emphasises the need for a whole organisation approach, senior management involvement, tracking of pupils within and between all key stages and the use of effective intervention strategies.

The Quality Standard is renewed every three years.

The certificate was presented to the school by Corporate Director for Lifelong Learning, Hywyn Williams, on 1 November at 2pm.
