Denbighshire taking tough stance on lead thefts

The theft of lead from school buildings in Denbighshire will not be tolerated – that’s the message from the county council as it counts the cost of this criminal behaviour.

As a result of these thefts, Denbighshire County Council has replaced the missing materials with artificial lead. Any lead stocks left have been treated with Smartwater, which means that lead is treated with a special liquid that can be identified forensically under ultraviolet light.

Councillor Eryl Williams, Denbighshire’s Cabinet Lead Member with responsibility for education said: “Callous thieves have targeted schools in a number of communities across the county . We know that thieves have targeted buildings other than schools across the region, but we are annoyed and angry that they seem to be targeting schools in particular. We need to use our resources carefully and incidents like this are quite frankly a nuisance.

“We would encourage people to keep an eye on schools in their communities, especially overnight, at weekends and during the holidays. Anyone with any suspicions of any anti-social behaviour around our schools should contact the police immediately.”
